Chase Ultimate Rewards Points is a popular choice among points enthusiasts and frugal tourists alike.
Since Flying Blue is a transfer partner of Chase, you can essentially accumulate Flying Blue miles as a result of earning Chase Ultimate Rewards (UR) points.
Earning Ultimate Rewards Points is relatively easy and straightforward and can be accrued by spending using any of the following credit cards below:

In order to have the ability to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to the Flying Blue Program (Air France / KLM), you need to own at least one of Chase's premium cards.
Again, you only need one of these cards to unlock the benefit of transferring to travel partners such as Flying Blue.

Pro Tip: Without one of these three Chase premium cards, you will not be able to transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Flying Blue (Air France/KLM) or to any of Chase's Travel Partners.
Deep Dive on Chase Credit Cards: No Annual Fee Versus Premium Cards
Before we proceed with the steps involved in transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Flying Blue (Air France / KLM), it is critical that we understand the distinction between no-annual-fee Chase cards and premium Chase cards.
The table below illustrates which category each card belongs to.

Chase provides additional benefits to premium card consumers that are not available to those who only have no-annual-fee cards to soften the blow of the steep annual fees.
One of these valuable premium Chase card benefits is having access to my all-time favorite Ultimate Rewards (UR) redemption option –TRANSFER TO TRAVEL PARTNERS.
Transfer Ultimate Rewards to Travel Partners Such As Flying Blue
It is important to underscore that each Ultimate Reward point is not created equal.
The value of each Ultimate Reward point will depend on whether they originate from a premium card or not.
Even if no-annual-fee cards generate Ultimate Reward points, you will not have the ability to transfer to partners, including Flying Blue, unless you have one of Chase's premium cards.
In the image below, you can see that I have Ultimate Rewards points in several accounts, but not all of these points can be transferred to partners.
And this bears repeating – this generous redemption option of transferring to partners, such as Flying Blue, can only be carried out through one of the three Chase premium cards.
That is the principal reason why I strongly recommend owning at least ONE premium Chase card because this incredibly fantastic redemption benefit would not be possible without one.
In my case, the only premium card I have kept in my wallet is the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Credit Card (CSR), but a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Credit Card or a Chase Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card will also make you eligible to transfer to partners as well.
Chase Travel Partners
The chart below lists out all the other Chase travel partners. Please check their website regularly as it is not unusual for Chase to initiate new relationships (Hello, AerLingus!) and terminate old ones (Bye, Korean Air).
What if my Ultimate Reward Points are in my No-Annual Fee Cards?
Should you find the majority of your points in a no-annual-fee card, do not worry because Chase generously allows the transfer of points between Chase Ultimate Rewards accounts.
Chase calls this feature " COMBINE POINTS " (see image below) and can be accessed under any of your Ultimate Rewards accounts.
As a general rule of thumb, you would need to transfer all of your no-annual-fee Chase Ultimate Rewards Points to your premium cards before you are given the ability to move your points to travel partners, such as Flying Blue (Air France / KLM).
This transfer also significantly increases the worth of your Ultimate Rewards Points acquired from your no-annual-fee cards, essentially making them more valuable.
Steps for Combining Points or Converting No Annual Fee Chase Points to Premium Chase Points
STEP 1:
Log on to any of your Ultimate Rewards accounts and click the drop-down menu button (see image below).
STEP 2:
The drop-down menu will reveal the different redemption options including "Combine Points".
STEP 3:
Click "Combine Points" then select a no-annual-fee card under "Move my points from".
STEP 4:
Select a premium card under "Move my points to" where you want your points to go.
STEP 5:
Initiate the transfer by clicking "Continue".
You will be directed to a page where you can select either transferring all of your points or a specific amount of points to your premium card.
Since the value of your no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards points significantly increases when transferred to a premium card, I highly suggest transferring all of your points.
Generally, you would want all of your Ultimate Rewards Points stored in one of your premium cards at all times. Click "Review" once you have made your selection.
If you have 2 premium cards that include the Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR), transfer all of your points to the CSR as that provides the best redemption value among all the other Chase cards. Want to know more? Here's a beginner's guide that will go over the differences between premium cards.
STEP 6:
Chase will give you another opportunity to review your selection. You would want to make sure that you are transferring no-annual-fee Ultimate Rewards Points to a premium card.
In this example, I am moving my Ultimate Rewards Points from my no-annual-fee Chase Ink Cash to the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which is a premium card.
Confirm & Submit.
STEP 7:
Once you have completed this transfer, you will be notified if the transfer was successful.
Once your points are in your premium card, you can now transfer Ultimate Rewards Points to Flying Blue (see next section).
What is Flying Blue?
Flying Blue is the frequent flier loyalty program of KLM and AirFrance.
Unbeknownst to many that it also has a few other member airlines:
- Air France
- KLM
- Calin
- Kenya Airways
- Transavia
- TAROM
How Do You Earn Flying Blue Miles?
Essentially, you can earn Flying Blue Miles from flying with any of its member airlines.
And yet, you are probably wondering how you'll be able to earn Flying Blue miles when you haven't even heard of most of these airlines.
You are not alone. Thankfully, there are two other ways to accrue Flying Blue miles.
First, since Air France and KLM are members of Sky Team, you can technically earn Flying Blue Miles whenever you fly an alliance partner.
Below are the current Sky Team carriers as of February 2021.
The second and arguably easiest method to accumulate Flying Blue Miles is to transfer points from travel credit cards.
Currently, Chase Ultimate Rewards , American Express Membership Rewards , Citi ThankYou Points , and Capital One are all Flying Blue transfer partners.
In this blog post, I will walk you through the steps on how to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to Flying Blue so you can be on the way to your next vacation.
Before You Transfer Your Chase Points: Check For Flying Blue Award Space Availability
Prior to starting the transfer process, you want to make sure that there is actual award space available.
My recommended steps are as follows:
STEP 1:
First, you would need to create a Flying Blue Account which should take less than 5 minutes.
STEP 2:
Once done with setting up your account with Flying Blue, keep your login credentials handy as you will need them to check for award space on both Air France's and KLM's websites.
STEP 3:
Initiate your search either on AirFrance's or KLM's website using your Flying Blue account.
Plug in your home airport, destination, and preferred dates. Then select what is compatible with your schedule and the number of points.
It goes without saying that flexibility is key in finding the lowest-priced award seat in the calendar. Since Flying Blue generates dynamic pricing, expect to see significant mileage/price variability across dates and airlines.
It is still quite unclear for me what exactly drives a price up or down so dramatically between carriers.
Let's look at the image below to illustrate this fact. As you can see the difference of miles required on identical routes on the same day is absurd: 72K, 265K, and 375K.
STEP 4:
Select your preferred flights and write down the information on a piece of paper or your spreadsheet.
Afterward, call Flying Blue to put this ticket on hold before you jumpstart your transfer. Calling also eliminates the risk of transferring points to Flying Blue prematurely.
It is not uncommon that websites show phantom award space that disappears as soon as you are ready to book, so speaking with an agent to confirm availability and putting the seat on hold are suggested actions steps before transferring points.
While Flying Blue can hold Air France and KLM tickets for 72 hours, they can only guarantee a 24-hour hold for partner airlines like Virgin Atlantic.
STEP 5:
Once you have the ticket on hold, initiate the transfer process by following the steps in the section below.
Steps on How to Transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards to Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)
Assuming that you already have your Ultimate Rewards Points in one of your Chase premium cards, transferring to Flying Blue is quite simple and straightforward.
STEP 1: You Need a Chase Premium Card Before You Can Transfer to Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)
Go to Chase.com, then Click One of Your Premium Cards.
Each premium card will give you the option to access Ultimate Rewards.
If you do not have sufficient points, you can transfer points from your other no-annual-fee Chase cards to your premium card. Please see the previous sections for steps on how to "Combine Points".
STEP 2: Select Transfer to Travel Partners
Flying Blue (Air France / KLM) is one of Chase's many travel partners.
STEP 3: Scroll Down to Flying Blue (Air France / KLM)
Select Airlines, then Look for Flying Blue (Air France / KLM) and Click Transfer Points
STEP 4: Type In Your Flying Blue Frequent Flier Number
Enter your Details and Flying Blue Member ID Number
STEP 5: Enter the Number of Points You Would Like to Transfer to Flying Blue
Type in the number of points you would like to transfer in 1,000 Ultimate Rewards increments.
The transfer ratio is 1:1, so 1 Ultimate Rewards Point = 1 Flying Blue Mile.
The minimum amount Chase allow for transfers is 1,000 Ultimate Rewards points.
STEP 6: Confirm and Submit
Confirm if all the info is correct then click Submit.
STEP 7: Wait for Flying Blue Miles to Show Up In Your Account
How Long Does It Take for Ultimate Rewards Points to Transfer to Flying Blue?
In my experience, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer instantly to Flying Blue (Air France / KLM).
I suggest checking your Flying Blue online account immediately to verify if the transfer was successful.
STEP 8: Book Your Flying Blue Award Flight
Once the miles are all in your Flying Blue account, call Flying Blue again to book the ticket that you have put on hold.
Since the transfer is instantaneous, it is also an alternative to execute the transfer while in the middle of your first call and book your Flying Blue Award flight as soon as the points transfer is completed.
STEP 9: Write Down Your Confirmation Numbers and Record Locators
Make sure to write down the confirmation numbers and/or record locators for your particular flights.
If you are flying multiple carriers, each airline will have a different confirmation code so take note of each of them.
You will need this information when you call those airlines to select seats.

Every so often, Flying Blue runs promotions where they offer certain routes for a discount. This can certainly provide incredible value for those who want to get as much mileage from their points.
